Choreographer

Artistic statement: My practice involves working with very open, creative ideas; offering out structures and working with the dancers to really use their own ideas and ways of moving. I enjoy noticing the ways that ideas are interpreted and allow the process to flow organically hopping from idea to idea, following the directions that we find ourselves in.

The process is collaborative and currently I am very interested in ways to draw a very inclusive audience, and how to really engage with everybody.

You and Me Dancing

 For Zoe

After being asked to make a short work for the feminist stage Palais de Boob at Secret Garden Party festival, I drew together 3 other dance artists to create the beginnings of my own company made up of diverse dancers. We created a 10 minute work inspired by the visual art work of Zoe Buckman. July 2017.

Epic Arts

Visiting the organisation whilst travelling in Cambodia, I returned to teach class to both students from the Inclusive Arts Course and the Epic Encounters Dance Company. Whilst there I also choreographed a work on each of the groups. With both groups we drew on discussions around political and social behaviours towards people with disabilities, in particular regarding traditional Khmer dance, and each work went in a very different direction. With both groups we utilised my experience in traditional Cornish dance to add to the conversation. June 2016.

Collaboration between Freya Spencer and Only Gili

Untitled dance film

When visiting Gili Trawangan I met the artist under the name Only Gili. We worked together collaboratively and I also studied with him for an intensive week in the dance fusion Animal Pop; a fusion of traditional Indonesian Dance and Hiphop.  This film is the result of our collaborative work, combining elements of Animal Pop with my natural improvised reaction to the environment and landscape. Gili Trawangan, Indonesia. April 2016.
